"Madhav Ghimire"

Madhav Prasad Ghimere is a prominent poet and a writer in Nepali
Literature. He was born in 1919 at a remote village of Lamjung
District in Western Nepal. There was no proper education system
back in those days. He learned astrology science with local
Pundit and later went to language school “bhasa pathsala”
located almost 2-3 hours of walking distance from his village.
Later, he moved to Katmandu and enrolled in Durbar High school
for his formal education.
While he was in Bhasa Patsala, he started writing poems. He even
won “Ramayan” as a prize for his writing. He first published
his first poem during his stay at the language school.
During his high school days, he continuously wrote poems and
published them. |
He started building a
reputation of being a prolific writer among his colleague
and mentors. He started working at Nepal Bhasa Prakashan Smiti. His career as a writer gradually
developed and became editor of “Gorkha patra” the National
Weekly news magazine in 1946. He won a poetry competition
about National Flag of Nepal. He also continuously wrote for
other paper “Sarada” and “Udaya”. He took training in a teacher
training program and later taught Nepali literature in a
Tahachal Campus. In 1957, he became member of Royal Nepal
Academy. He devoted his time and energy in promoting Nepali
literature. During his tenure at Royal Nepal Academy, he became
a vice-chancellor from 1979 to 1988, and then ultimately become
chancellor till 1990. Growing up at a remote village boy, with
his ambition, devotion and talent he became reputed, nationally
renowned poet and writer.
He had published countless poems and articles in many publishing
magazines. Beside that he had written and edited many books.
“Gauri” his poetry collection was written in memory of his
beloved wife Gauri. To name few, “Malati Mangale”, “Himal pari
Himal Wari” and “Sakuntala” are his literary achievement.
For his work, he has received the Distinguished Academy Medal,
Shree Prasiddha Praval Gorkha Dakshinabahu, Bhanubhakta Award,
and Tribhuwan Pragya Puraskar among others. His relentless
contribution to Nepalese literature will always be paradigm to
next generation.
