"PERSONALITIY" Motiram Bhatta (1866 – 1996)

Motiram Bhatta is the crown jewel of Nepalese Literature. He was born in 1866, Katmandu Nepal. He started his education at early age of six in Banaras, India. He became fluent in many languages such as English, Pharasi, Newari, Sanskrit, Bengali, Urdu and Hindi. He also received some music lesson at Pharasi School. Influenced by Pharasi Instructors, he incorporated Gazal (form of pharasi songs) in Nepali literature. He Heard about Nepali Ramayana translated by Bhanu Bhakta Acharya. Impressed by Acharya’s Ramayana, he set out to accumulate the works of “Adi kabi” Acharya. 

After his Relentless research, he edited Bhanu Bhakta’s literary works and published it. Few Years later, He published the biography of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya. It was his effort that brought the recognition of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya and Nepali Ramayana.

He spent most of his time promoting Nepali language and literature. He established a printing press, where he used to publish many Nepalese poems and literary works. His magnetic characteristics bring many other Nepalese writers together. He organized many poetry symposiums, interactions recital events of Gazals, literary seminars and discussed about promotion of Nepali language. He himself was a prolific writer. He had published his won poems and creative writings. His Pralad-Bhakti written in verses style hit the road as popular rhymes among people. He also Translated Sakuntala into Nepali.

To day we remember him as a significant publisher, writer, poet, and biographer writing in the Nepalese language. He paved the foundation for the promotion of Nepali language and literature upon which it is flourishing today.At the young age of thirty, he passed away, but his devotion and contribution to Nepali language makes him eternal shining star of the Nepali literature.-
