"Yuga Kabi Siddhi Charan Shrestha"
Siddhi Charan Shrestha is the eminent figure in Nepalese poetry
realm. Son of Vishnu Charan Shrestha and Neer Kumari Shrestha,
he was born in 1912, Okhalduhnga in East Nepal. Influenced by
his own father, who was then a renounced novelist, he started
writing poetry at early age of thirteen.
“Bhuichala” was the first book he published during the
disastrous earthquake in Nepal. Much of his work symbolizes
patriotism, nationalism and conveys revolutionary thoughts. His
famous poem “My lovely Place Okhaladunga” truly expresses
his fascination and passion about his birthplace. Then Rana
government, didn’t like his sincere expression of freedom and
democracy, hence he was sentenced for eighteen years in prison.
During his lifetime he wrote many poems, both in Nepali and
Newari. He also wrote religious poems such as "Devighat".Some
of his literary work are listed as follow: Urvashi, Mero
Pratibimba, Ashu, Kopila, Biswa Betha, Mangal Man, Junkiri,
Kuhiro Ra Gham, Banchiraheko Awaz, Jyanmara Shail, Tirimiritara,
Bali, Bhimsen Thapa, Yudha Ra Shanti, Aatma Bilauna, Siddhi
Charan Ka Pratinidhi Kabita, and Siddhi Charan Ka Jail Samjhana.
He has also published some Newari poetry work such as Lumbini,
Trishna, Fuswa, Siswa, Gyaswa, Nari Hridaya, Urbashi, Siddhi
Charanya Nibanda Sangraha, and Ghama. Other unpublished works
are Muswa, Siddhi Charanka Angreji Kabita Sangraha, and Siddhi
Charanka Yatra Smaran.
From 1957 to 1965, he was honored as a member of the Royal Nepal
Academy and, after that, as a life member. He was also
associated with the literary journal Sharada and the bi-weekly
Gorkhapatra. Later on, he worked with the Dainik Awaz and the
poetry magazine, Kavita, as the chief editor. He also received
many honorable awards such as Praval Gorkha Dakshin Bahu,
Vikhyat Trishakti Patta, Tribhuwan Puraskar, Prithivi Pragya
Puraskar, and awards by the Royal Nepal Academy.
He passed away at the age of 80 in 1992. He gave the new
direction to Nepalese poetry society. He was decorated by the
honor of “Poet of the Century” (“Yuga Kabi”).
