Shailendra Sakar:

Shailendra Sakar was born at Bhojpur Bazar of eastern Nepal, n 1947. While in school, he came in contact with some political activists who had then gone to his remote village to seek refuge. Inspired, Sakar carved a dream of a democratic Nepal and moved to Kathmandu in search of a job. Later he joined Saraswati campus of T.U. to continue his studies and in 1972 received a Master’s in Nepali Literature and another Master’s in Political Science in 1974 from Tribhuvan University.

In 1979, Sakar initiated a movement of discarded communities to protest against the cruel formalities of the ruthless Panchayat system. At this phase of his life, he came under the influence of the Hungry Generation Poets and Beats poets. In 1988, Sakar joined the Boot Polish Movement to attain the freedom of Press from the clutches of the Establishment and to restore the dignity of the writer of the street. He also edited Mantra, a literary magazine.

In 1979, Sakar published Collage (Royal Nepal Academy, Kathmandu), a collection of short stories where he experimented with the traditional narrative mode and created an anti-hero persona to depict the agony of the Nepalese social milieu, and Shailendra Sakar Ka Kavita (Sajha Prakashan, Kathmandu) a collection of poems that established Sakar as a major poet who voiced the cause of the discarded communities, altering the elite definition of poetry. In 1991, Sakar published his second collection of poems, Sarpaharu Geet Sundainan (Nirala, New Delhi) that vehemently attacked the cruelties of the party, Panchayat regime.

Recently he has, along with Yuyutsu R.D., initiated a movement, Content Metamorphosis in Nepali poetry. His other works include Ramayan and Other Stories and KaalPatra and Other Stories.

Among his several edited books, most popular remains Nepali Kathama Nari Hastakcshar ( Women Signatures in Nepali Short Stories) which has also been translated from the Nepali into Japanese and published by Dandansha Co., Tokyo, Japan. Nango Taar ( Naked Wire), a long book-length poem in Nepali which exposes the excesses of the multi-party democracy and disillusionment resulting from the ugly dance of power mongers shall appear soon from the Sajha Publication of Kathmandu.

Currently, Sakar lives in Kathmandu and works as a Professor at Nepali Dept. of Classic Academy, Thapathali Kathmandu. His collection of poems on America entitled: “Bartholdi’s Dream: Dream of America in my Eyes.” shall come at soon. He is also an academician at Royal Nepal Academy.
